Minnesota Governor Mark Dayton signed a bill that requires crime laboratories in the state be accredited to test drugs or conduct other forensic analysis. Labs have until July 2015 to begin the accreditation process.
"All forensic laboratories in Minnesota should be accredited," Dayton said. "Those labs process evidence that help make determinations of guilt or innocence that have enormous effects on people's lives."
Crime lab accreditation of crime became an issue in Minnesota after it an independent report in 2012 revealed numerous inadequacies at the St. Paul Police Department's crime lab.
