ISO/IEC 17025

How to Achieve ISO/IEC 17025 Accreditation

Where Do I Start?

We recommend reviewing the ISO/IEC 17025 checklist, ANAB guidance documents, and the flow chart below to begin the accreditation process.

The next step is to send email or call 414-501-5455, to begin discussions. You’ll find our employees very welcoming of inbound inquiries and ready to help.

Determining your scope of accreditation is the next critical step. Your scope defines the specific calibrations and/or tests for which your organization will be accredited, and it helps us to determine the number of days needed for your on-site assessment. It’s not necessary to become accredited for all your organization’s capabilities, and it’s possible that the initial draft scope may not be your final scope of accreditation.

Guidance on Scopes of Accreditation will help you define your scope. You can find examples of scopes by searching ANAB-accredited organizations; just click on search and scroll down to the Certificate Document to view the organization's scope. Our Scope Templates for ISO/IEC 17025 Accreditation will be helpful in drafting your scope.

Our customers value the skill of our employees and assessors in providing fast and helpful service. ANAB has a 97% customer retention rate and is highly regarded in the accreditation community.

When undergoing an accreditation assessment, you want assessors who are not just skilled and knowledgeable but also individuals who know how to engage in a courteous, congenial and meaningful manner. This is how working ANAB makes the difference. No matter who you deal with at ANAB, we serve our customers in a way that sets us apart from the others. This is a reflection of our organizational culture.

As a non-profit, non-government entity, ANAB operates with the freedom and speed of a private entity and without the burden of a profit-first mentality. We work closely with many U.S. federal agencies, including sponsorship of accreditation programs, auditing on the agency’s behalf, and directly accrediting the agencies themselves.

We believe in a partnership approach to assessments. Our assessors are highly trained industry experts who meet rigorous technical requirements.

ANAB provides public and private training courses for all the ISO standards for which we offer accreditation.

What is ISO/IEC 17025 and What Does It Contain?

ISO/IEC 17025 specifies the general requirements for the competence to carry out tests and/or calibrations, including sampling. It covers testing and calibration quality systems using standard methods, non-standard methods, and laboratory-developed methods. You can purchase ISO/IEC 17025 from ANSI.

ISO/IEC 17025 consists of five elements: Scope, Normative References, Terms and Definitions, Management Requirements, and Technical Requirements. The two main sections are Management Requirements and Technical Requirements. Management Requirements are primarily related to the operation and effectiveness of the laboratory's quality management system. Technical Requirements includes factors that determine the correctness and reliability of the tests and calibrations performed by the laboratory.
